5 Simple Design Process That Delivers Big Results

Do you really need an interior designer to help you design your home? In this article, we will show you 5 simple design process that you can use to upgrade your home effectively.

5 Simple Design Process

1. Determine Your Life Style First
Your lifestyle will dictate the choices of all furniture and decorative items. Check if the circumstances below apply to you,

- You are planning to have a baby: you need some furniture and fabrics that don't collect dust.

- You are a dog or cat person: you may need to look for simple furniture that is durable and easy to maintain.

- You enjoy watching movies: a big amount of your budget should be reserved for the home entertainment unit.

- You enjoy cooking: in this case, you need to get organized using smart closets and containers.

Make a list of furniture and decorative items that complement your lifestyle.

2. Choose Your Style
Now you need to determine the direction of the overall design. At this stage, you should find the sources of styles that inspire you as below,

- Designer Showcase: The easiest way to come up with a good style without reinventing the wheel is to visit showcase houses in your area. Don't forget to take a notepad with you so you can take note of things you like and things you don't like. If you collect enough information, you will see the patterns surface. If you are not sure what you should look for, try to take note about the type of furniture and style, special features in the room such as window treatment, molding, door and flooring, the centerpiece of each room, background color, accessories, fabrics, color scheme and colors used for upholstery and draperies.

- Decorating Books and Magazines: You can also take note of things you like and don't like decorating books.

- Furniture Store Room Settings: You should also take note about the price of items you find interesting so you can control your budget easier.

3. Utilize the Pin Board
At this stage, you want to become more specific about what you want. It's very important to organize information in the same place for easy reference. What you need to do is to gather the catalog of furniture, pick the style that you love, cut the images and put them on the pinboard.

4. Adjust Your Budget
Now you have some concrete idea about types of furniture and style, let's take a look at your budget. Determine if each item should be,

- Made by yourself (DIY)

- Bought from the flea market to save costs

- Bought from furniture superstore to get the good deals

- Eliminated because you don't really want them

5. Make the Final Touch
You can use a playroom or laundry as your design lab. The items below are things that you can try,

- Try new patterns, fabrics, and paper so you can be sure if the particular style really works for you.

- Test which items should be displayed on your cabinets and why.

- Paint one side of a wall with light color first. If you don't like it, it's going to be easier to paint darker or bolder colors later.

- Experiment with accessories like baskets and rugs to see if they look nice for you.

After that, make a final touch by adding some accessories such as

- Mirror
- Lamp
- Rug
- Table runner
- Vase
- Artwork
- Basket
- Candlestick
- Hook
- Quilt
- Pitcher
- Dish
- Musical Instrument
- Photo Frame
